Cellulitis is a common but potentially serious
infection of the skin and underlying skin
tissue. It mostly affects the lower legs,
although it can occur anywhere on the body or
face. Infections on the face are more common in
children and older adults. Cellulitis develops
when bacteria invade the skin, often when skin
is broken or open. When bacteria spread under
the skin and into the soft tissues, the body
reacts by creating inflammation (swelling,
redness, pain and/or warmth.) If Cellulitis does
not receive proper attention, it can extend to
the lymph nodes and blood stream, posing serious
health threats and complications.
Cellulitis occurs when one or more types of bacteria
(commonly streptococcus or staphylococcus) enter
through a break or crack in the skin. Breaks in the
skin can come from any range of preexisting skin
conditions or abrasions, such as small cuts,
puncture wounds, extremely dry/flaky skin, open
sores related to dermatitis or psoriasis, athlete’s
foot, ulcers or recent surgery. Certain types of
insect or spider bites also can transmit bacteria
that start a cellulitis infection.
People with the highest risk for developing cellulitis include
those who have had some disruption or trauma to the skin, those
with specific preexisting medical conditions or those with
compromised blood circulation (such as the elderly or
diabetics.)
As you age, blood circulation becomes less effective. Without

drugs (prednisone or cyclosporine) are also at risk for
infections such as Cellulitis. Additional conditions that can
cause cracks or openings in the skin include chickenpox,
shingles, lymphedema (chronic swelling) and fungal infections
(warts, athlete’s foot.)
Cellulitis can occur in almost any part of the body but most
commonly occurs in areas with poor or bad skin circulation, such
as the lower legs and feet. Visually, cellulitis is
characterized by redness, red streaking of the skin, swelling
and, in random cases, leaking of yellow fluid from the skin
(similar to blister-fluid.) The area will feel tender or painful
and warm to the touch.
If the bacterial infection is not treated properly,
it can spread through skin tissues and to the blood
stream where it is carried to other areas of the
body. This heightened infection is extremely
dangerous and warrants serious medical attention.
If, in conjunction with other cellulitis symptoms,
you experience a high fever, chills, nausea,

increased pain, or frequent drainage from the skin,
go to the hospital as soon as possible. An infection
